For the benefit of anyone still following Spectral Shadows on Live Journal, I will continue to announce and link new episodes here. But I won't be putting the actual episodes on LJ anymore, as the coding takes way too much time. Episodes will now be found on Fur Affinity in the scraps folder, except for the latest episode, which will go to the main gallery first and then be stored in scraps when the following episode is posted.
Why scraps? Well, that's the only way you can have 2 galleries on FA, and since Photobucket destroyed my Live Journal art gallery, I now need 2 galleries on FA, as it is way too confusing to have stories and art mixed in the same gallery.
Also, when you click the link for the new episodes you will note that you don't see it on the page. You have to click the "Download" link, and it will open in the text program of your choice that reads Rich Text Format.
I hear someone saying, "That's dumb. Why can't I read it on the web page?"
Well, to make it appear on the page I have to upload it in .txt format, which means no formatting, as well as a little diamond shape wherever I've used a special character. Which means I have to write "Rocinantè" as "Rocinante," and it would just waste entirely too much time to have to rewrite everything, again.
But by downloading the Rich Text document, you get to see the thing the way I wrote it, the way I intended it to be published.
Yes, I'm being ornery. I'm just sick of web sites wasting my time, forcing me to do things over and over in ways I don't want to do them. Forcing me to spend days learning code just so they can come along later, change the code and make me have to start over from scratch.
And yes, to read certain episodes you will have to turn the mature filter off. This is not a G rated series, even though I took the "Yiff" word out in the last rewrite. Well, I didn't really take it out. It's still there, it just means something different now. So, if you're inclined to reread the series to refresh your memory, I'm in hopes this change will meet with your approval.
Yes, I know FA is not the best place for a series like mine. I know I could do this, that and the other thing to better present and promote my series. But, dang it, if I'm going to write the thing I just don't have time to do all that.
So, if you care, just be happy that I've found the will to start writing again and be glad I have someplace to put it.
All that out of the way, here's the link to the new episode. Enjoy.
Four episodes after writing this, I was told my booth on Book Island was going to be featured for promotion, which meant my series was going to be pitched to a lot of people who can't read it on Fur Affinity. So I had to take on the job of reconstructing the Live Journal site, regardless of how much I didn't want to do it.
This effectively put Spectral Shadows back on hiatus for the rest of 2013, and there is so much work involved that I'm still not finished with the reconstruction. Oh well, maybe 2014 will be my year. (Why do I have the sinking feeling I'll be saying that every year for the rest of my life?)
Yeah, it's good that you don't bother with the whole .txt thing. I did it for when I posted "The Dream Parallax" on FA and LiveJournal and...it was too much of a headache. ESPECIALLY since I went and posted it on Deviant Art too!
Well, I'll still try to help promote your serial too. I still have the Spectral Shadows facebook page going, so when I see any updates here (or if there's anything you want me to post about too) I'll post it on there. I'll need to start doing advertising for that too, since loads of people seem to have FB nowadays.
Have you considered getting your own webpage? I used to have one through Canaca that was around $90/year for the domain & a buttload of space.
this was years ago though, I don't know if Canaca is still around, or if they're still the cheapest
I worry about it being on FA though, because I think that people who aren't logged in can't see mature content - which could discourage new readers.
there's other options similar to Livejournal (like blogger or tumblr)
Yeah, but moving to any of those sites means I have to reformat every episode, and it just takes too much time. I get sick just thinking about it.
Well, if people won't read it on FA, hopefully they'll buy the e-books, once I get that mess sorted out. But even that takes time and study that I'm scared to commit to.
Can't you just cut & paste them from the program you type them in?
It's a shame sites like Geocities no longer exist, a few ads for full creative control over formatting would be a small price to pay :(
I wish it was that simple, but the formatting from Word or Open Office doesn't carry over. That means I have to add code for indenting, italics and special characters. It takes weeks to reformat this thing.
If I was going to have my own web site for it I'd have to pay someone to make it for me.
If you find me a free site that isn't covered with ads, I'd gladly make you a simple site. I used to write all the HTML for my old websites. They weren't fancy, but they got the job done :)
You'd have to read every episode and spot every place I've used italics and put in the code. It's too much to ask.
Besides, you need to drawn and I need to write. There comes a time when one just has to cry enough. Now that I've got going again I don't want to stop for anything.
Fair enough - I just want to help out any way I can, to try to increase your audience :)
